Clutch Kits: Understanding them and their importance in your vehicle

Clutch Kit

Clutch kits play a significant role in the overall operation of a vehicle. They are essential for carrying out important functions such as ensuring that your vehicle moves effectively, efficiently and smooth gear transitions.

A clutch kit consists of three main components: The clutch plate or friction disc, pressure plate and the release bearing. These components work hand in hand to control the transfer of power from the engine to the gearbox and to the wheels of a vehicle.

Clutch Plate (Friction Disc)

A clutch plate’s main function is transferring power from the engine to the vehicle’s gearbox by contacting with the flywheel. This ensures that the vehicle moves when the clutch is engaged and separates when the clutch pedal is pressed to allow for smooth gear changes.

Pressure Plate

A pressure plate acts as a clamp and puts force to the clutch plate, keeping it firmly against the flywheel. This ensures that power is transferred from the engine to the wheels of the vehicle. A worn pressure plate has a high possibility of resulting in poor contact, ultimately leading to the clutch slipping.

Release Bearing/Concentric Slave Cylinder

The purpose of a release bearing lies in assistance with disengaging the clutch when the clutch pedal is pressed. This enables smooth operation and reduces the amount of friction between moving parts when changing the gears on a vehicle.

Functions of a Clutch Kit

The main function of a clutch connects and disconnect power between the engine and the gearbox to transfer the engine speed to the wheels.  This allows the driver of the vehicle to:

  • Smoothly change gears without the vehicle rolling or stalling
  • Control the speed of the vehicle
  • Bring the vehicle to a stop without switching off the engine

How to Tell if your Clutch is Slipping

Some common signs of a slipping clutch include but are not limited to:

  • Increase in engine revs without a matching increase in the speed
  • Loss of power of the vehicle while driving
  • Lack of power and difficulty when driving uphill
  • A burning smell from the vehicle
  • Reduced vehicle performance

Signs of a Worn Clutch Kit

Some common signs of a worn clutch include but are not limited to:

  • Difficulty in gear changes
  • A spongy or hard clutch pedal
  • Unusual funny noises when pressing the clutch
  • Vibrations when engaging with the clutch

A worn clutch plate can cause power loss due to the clutch slipping.

This highlights the important role that a clutch kit plays in the overall maintenance, performance and reliability of a vehicle. Goldwagen supplies an affordable wide range of trusted quality brands for clutch kits, to ensure smooth driving and long-lasting vehicle performance that can keep you driving happily.
