In 1906, Alfred Teves established the firm in Germany that still bears his name today, for the development of brake systems. In 1926 the first Ate lockheed brake system were fitted to an Adler 'Standard' car.
In 1954/55, Mercedes Benz Grand Prix cars were fitted with Ate brake boosters.
In 1975, BMW competition cars are fitted with high performance discs. In the same year, ATE brake systems are fitted to Peugeot, Renault and Chrysler.
By 1978, Ate disc brakes had already been fitted to approximately 45 million vehicles world wide.
Several factories are erected around the world producing Ate brake systems, in Germany, Brazil, Spain, United States and South Africa. South Africa
In 1968 the South African subsidiary of Alfred Teves Germany was established in Boksburg commencing with the manufacture of brake calipers and hoses for Mercedes Benz.
1983, First locally produced master cylinders / booster supplied to Ford.
1992, Ate South Africa becomes the first South African recipient of the new Toyota Motor Corporation "Crystal Award" for quality excellence.
1997, Ate South Africa awarded brake caliper business for the BMW E-46.
2002, Ford Asia Pacific awards Ate South Africa the brake systems business for the Ford focus - Supplying South Africa and Asia.
2004, NAPA and Parts Incorporated nominated Ate South Africa in top 10 supplier awards.
2004 Toyota P&A award Ate South Africa with 'Silver Certificate of Merit' supplier award.
2005 The managers of Ate South Africa concluded a buyout of previous shareholders and simultaneously structured a BEE equity involvement into a new company called Alfred Teves Brake Systems (Pty) Ltd.

Hella (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd. commenced operations in South Africa in 1957 under the name of Derek Riley & Co. (Pty) Ltd. In 1967 the factory moved to Uitenhage, and the Company’s name was changed to Hella (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd. In 1989, Hella Germany sold 40% of its shareholding to Metair Investments Limited. In 1993 Metair Investments Limited acquired the balance of the shareholding. Hella, as a subsidiary of Metair Investments Limited, has access to a multitude of facilities and technical resources, through Technical Aid Agreements with Hella Germany and Koito in Japan.

The Hella product range consists of headlights, general lights, horns, injection moulded plastic parts, and merchandise items.
