Free State Gold Rush...

The men and women of the popular Goldwagen Challenge Series will be going for gold as they head to the sleepy mining town of Welkom in the Free State Goldfields for the seventh round of the 2011 Pro Tour season on Saturday the 13 August. This will be the second time that the Pro Tour Roadshow will be visiting the dusty plains of the Phakisa Freeway and plenty of close and exciting racing is expected once again.

Class A

After two non finishes at the previous round George Economides’ (Wealth Avenue Polo Hatch) has had his lead in the Class A Championship cut down to only eight points. He will be keen to get back to his winning ways as Waldie Meintjes (Performance Masters Polo Hatch) continues to hunt him down for class honours.

Wayne Masters (Performance Masters Golf 4) is nine points behind his team mate with Gerhard Henning (Robbie’s Auto Golf II) a further twelve points behind him after two good results in East London. Eddie Rodrigues (SEW Eurodrive Polo Hatch) drops down to fifth position after missing a number of races this season and has the added worry of Andy Gossman (Marty’s Autobody Golf II) who is now only three points behind him as well.

Class B

Kelvin van der Linde’s (Ferodo / Autoquip Golf I) dominance of the class continued at the sixth round of the championship and the fifteen year old sensation has now increased his lead in the Class B championship to a massive thirty points.

Quentin Thompson (Thompsons Volkswagen Golf I) seems to have regained some of the form that has eluded him over the last couple of races as he holds onto second position while a trio of drivers are involved in a tight battle for third. Rory Atkinson (Flight Hand Cleaner / OKO Polo Classic) is a solitary point ahead of Andrea Bate (Squish / Powerflow Golf I) and veteran driver Peter Thompson (Thompsons Volkswagen Golf II) who are tied on points for fourth position. Stuart Mack (Giulio Sabbatini Auto Stylists Golf I) drops down to sixth position after a disastrous result in East London but is still only six points behind the three way battle ahead of him.

Class C

The Class C battle has developed into a two horse race for the title. Young Keagan Blanckensee (Xerox / Digilogix Golf I) has taken the lead in this hotly contested class after two podium results at the previous event.

Andre Needham (Ultra Vision Golf I) is only a single point behind the new class leader despite the mechanical gremlins that robbed him of a decent points scoring opportunity in East London. James Hurley (Koni Golf I) holds onto third position with Brad Hall (Restonic SA Golf 1) a further seven points behind him. Adrian Wood (Afriboom Golf I) moves up to fifth position after a race win at the previous event and is only five points behind Hall. Paolo Piazza Musso (Piazza Motorsport Golf I) still holds onto sixth position, despite handing the reins of his car over to his son Devon. His position is very much under threat by Tyrell Govindsamy (Petroplast Golf I) who is now only three points behind the veteran karter.

Class D

Ryan Tholet’s (Prend Properties Polo Hatch) hold on the Class D championship seems to be slipping through his fingers. Two non finishes in East London have seen the rest of the field close in on him. Darren Nathan (Sex Trader Polo Hatch) has moved into second position and is only a solitary point behind Tholet. Steve Hurley (Koni Polo Hatch) is still nipping at their heels and is only a further two points behind Nathan. Deon Holliday (Centparts / Commercial Auto Glass Polo Hatch) drops down to fourth position with Justin Taylor (VW Techniques Golf II) a further twelve points behind him. Henry van Vledder (Batman Golf II) continues to hold onto sixth position with the rest of the field battling to stay in touch with the top six.

Overall

The battle for Overall Goldwagen Challenge Championship continues to get interesting. Kelvin van der Linde (Ferodo / Autoquip Golf I) has taken the lead in the championship after the previous event and finds himself a full twelve points ahead of Keagan Blanckensee (Xerox / Digilogix Golf I) who moves up three spots from fifth position. Andre Needham (Ultra Vision Golf I) holds onto third position with early series leader George Economides (Wealth Avenue Golf I) dropping down to fourth. Ryan Tholet (Prend Properties Polo Hatch) moves down to fifth position with Darren Nathan (Sex Trader Polo Hatch) making an appearance in the top six.

The 2011 season continues to see plenty of change throughout the individual classes and with only three races left in the year it is every man, and woman, for themselves. The second visit to the Phakisa Freeway for this season is bound to produce plenty more drama and excitement.
